Sigiriya Village Tour
Join this 2.5-hour Sigiriya village tour for a lifetime opportunity to be immersed in the nature and culture of a real Sri Lankan village. Your driver will pick you up from centrally located Sigiriya hotels & drive by a tuk-tuk to Ehelagala Village, a beautiful rural area in Sigiriya city. The tour starts with a bullock cart ride near to the village pond, and there you will experience a traditional catamaran boat ride to the next side of the rural village. After a short walk within the paddy fields & vegetable cultivation, you can reach the village house. At the village house you can relax & taste a delicious Sri Lankan Snack. Then take a tuk-tuk ride to the tour start point, and after finishing the tour, you will be taken back to your hotel by tuk-tuk.
Sigiriya Village Tour Plan
The complete Sigiriya village tour package includes a hotel pickup & drop-off by tuk-tuk, a bullock cart ride, a catamaran boat ride, a visit to a village house, village activity & a cooking demonstration, a local Snack and a tuk-tuk ride.
Hotel pickup by Tuk tuk: 8.30 am (Flexible)
You will be picked up from your hotel and drive approximately 15-30 minutes to reach the trekking starting point. A short transfer gives you a very good chance to experience the natural breeze and take photos of the attractions alongside the road.
Bullock cart ride
Usually this Sigiriya village tour begins with a Bullock Cart Ride to Ehelagala through unbeaten village tracks. It adjacent to the great ‘Sigiriya rock‘. Bullock cart is a one of major transportation system in ancient Sri Lanka. Bullock carts are still used in some Sri Lankan villages to transport goods.
We brought our fairly powerful bulls from the butcher shop, saved their lives, and now they will live with us forever. There are two Bulls dragging the cart and ride last long from 15 minutes. You can ride the bullock cart in gravel path becomes the dust, red soil of a bund.
You can see village houses, neighbourhoods, lovely paddy fields, and much more while travelling. we just wanted to let you know that this is a fun, chaotic ride. Rides ends near the Lake.
We can set up a hand tractor or tuk tuk ride if you don’t like the Bullock Cart ride.
Catamaran boat ride
The catamaran boat ride takes place on the Ehelagala lake. You will cruise admiring the wonderful views beside the lake, which is also overlooking the Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks. If you are interested, you can also join with the boatman and help out rowing the boat. He might surprise you with his craftsmanship and creativity: a hat for the gentleman and a beautiful necklace for the ladies. At the end of the tour, the boat will dock by the small village on the other side of the shore.
Village house activity demongstration
There will be a small presentation of how to make a roof out of coconut leaves and how to use kulla and mirisgala to separate rice seeds from the husks and straw.
You can observe the traditional daily life of a real village house. Should not miss a visit to the paddy field and see a garden where endemic vegetables are grown. Climb the treehouse next to the paddy field where farmers sleep at night and try to keep animals away from the paddy.
Cooking demongstration
You can enjoy a simple traditional meal prepared by a village woman the using the Farmer’s hand-picked vegetables from the plot. If time permits you can also see how a village woman cook a traditional meal or a roti.
